When I first came across Stephen, it was on youtube, and he was covering Charice's song, Note To God. It was one of the best renditions of that song I have ever heard. He played the song and sang it in his register (a lower key) and it fit perfectly. And if anything, it did not take away from the essence of the song. The movement was still there within the lyrics. And his singing? It was like a breath of fresh air. It's always a joy to hear a guy do a cover of a girl song, and make it sound like it never was a girl song. I guess what I'm trying to say is that him singing Note To God, as well as he did, was a pleasant surprise to me. Therefore, I've deemed him as being one of the best on youtube. (: Here, let me show you why I felt obliged to do so. This is him covering the song Unwell by Matchbox 20.
His voice is so masculine. He has the type of voice that fits well with simple acoustic songs because his voice isn't overdone. He's a really simple singer, but his voice is still very much attractive to the ears. ^_^ Ok, so lets dig a little deeper into his life. Stephen started singing in his church at the age of 4 years old. He just about fell in love with music from the very beginning. He said that it makes him feel happy, and good. Which makes sense if you think about it. Music is very therapeutic. Lol! Anyways, Stephen is the type of guy who wants to spread the joy of being happy to anyone and everyone, because he himself is a happy person, and very optimistic at that. And to his friends, they would describe him as being honest, reliable, and funny.
Stephen is many things aside from being a singer. He is an exceptional musician. In some of his videos on youtube, you'll see him playing the instruments himself, be it a guitar or a piano. And that is definitely NOT an overstatement because I can't even play one instrument. So kudos to you, Stephen. Haha! :) He is also an avid drawer, as well as a photographer. So in short, he's very much artistically inclined to the bones. And because he is so gifted in the practical arts, he joined a competition called Starmania in Austria, which is kind of like their version of our American Idol. He joined, not of his own accord, but because his friend urged him to do so. He passed the audition round, but did not want to go any further because he wanted to focus on his studies at that time. He was only 15 (or so) when he auditioned. Alright, so enough about him, lets get back to his music. ^_^ Here is his cover of Storm by Lifehouse. Hope you all like it!!
This is my absolute favorite cover of his! There's so much emotion in the words, and he is able to deliver the message without faltering one bit. Stephen is one of those "only-comes-once" kind of talents. Its really hard to miss or overlook the fact that he has such a beautiful voice, and that there is so much impact behind it. The sincerity in his voice is so effortless that it just strikes you in the heart and uplifts you. With me, I can FEEL the song. And its an amazing feeling. Stephen, you are truly one of a kind.
So, with that being said, I just wanted to end this weeks "Featured Artist" post with just a few more remarks regarding Stephen. For him, family is definitely his number one priority. Next comes his music. They are so closely matched that, for Stephen, the opportunity to touch a person through his music is the greatest feeling. Just the thought of someone being happy listening to him, is payment in itself. Stephen is one of the most gifted people I have ever come across. So I personally want to extend my thanks and appreciation to you, Stephen, because not too many people are aware that music is nothing without heart. And you, well, you have it. So, I wish you continued success, in everything you aspire to do, and especially your music.
